Position Summary

Reigate Grammar School Phnom Penh (RGSPP) is seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Chinese to lead and develop Chinese language and culture education across Early Years, Primary, and Secondary. This is a strategic role with responsibility for curriculum design, quality assurance, and team coordination across all phases, ensuring that Chinese provision reflects best practice and inspires students to achieve linguistic and cultural fluency.

Key Responsibilities

1) Strategic Leadership & Department Management

• Lead and inspire the strategic planning and development of the Chinese Department, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation across the school.

• Develop and oversee the Chinese K–12 curriculum, enrichment activities, cultural events, and external partnerships, ensuring alignment with British educational standards (including IGCSE, A-Level, and relevant international benchmarks).

• Prioritise high-quality teaching and learning across all phases, establishing clear and coherent progression pathways for both heritage and non-native learners.

• Prepare termly departmental reports and an annual strategic development plan; convene, chair, and minute regular departmental meetings.

• Engage proactively with parents to ensure high levels of satisfaction, clear communication, and shared understanding of learner pathways, curriculum provision, and departmental initiatives.

• Establish sustainable departmental structures, policies, and staffing models to support growth as enrolment and departmental capacity expand.

• Attend and contribute to Heads of Department meetings, driving cross-phase coherence and effective Primary–Secondary transition in Chinese.

• Oversee teaching allocations, language option processes, and timetabling to maximise student outcomes and staff effectiveness.

• Promote cross-curricular collaboration and embed Chinese learning within whole-school priorities and initiatives.


2) Curriculum, Assessment & Data

• Design Schemes of Work for EY–KS5, including pathways to IGCSE, A-Level, and HSK.

• Ensure consistency in progression and transition between phases.

• Stay up‑to‑date with national and international curriculum developments; adapt and refine the curriculum to meet parent expectations and local educational trends.

• Oversee assessment, tracking, and reporting systems; use data insights to inform differentiation, interventions, and strategic planning.

• Organise and coordinate entries for public examinations, external competitions, and administer internal exams including design, setting, invigilation, marking, standardisation, and moderation.

• Provide accurate information on Chinese courses for internal/external documents (prospectus, options booklets, website), ensuring clarity for students and parents.


3) Staff Development, Coaching & Quality Assurance

• Mentor newly qualified, newly appointed, and part‑time staff, ensuring effective induction, support, and retention.

• Conduct lesson observations and developmental feedback cycles; implement best practice in pedagogy, assessment, and classroom management.

• Lead professional learning (CPD/INSET), and foster a coaching culture that shares innovative teaching strategies and resources across the department.

• Contribute to performance management, teacher check‑ins, appraisals, probation reviews, and recruitment.


4) Pastoral, Inclusion & Student Well‑being

• Promote student well‑being and confidence in numeracy; build a positive, problem‑solving mindset to reduce maths anxiety.

• Implement effective differentiation for diverse learners, including SEND, EAL, and high‑attaining students; collaborate with inclusion and pastoral teams.

• Provide targeted academic support (intervention sessions, clinics, revision workshops) for examination cohorts and students needing additional help.

• Uphold a safe, respectful learning environment consistent with RGSPP’s values and behaviour culture.


5) Co‑Curricular, Enrichment & Competitions

• Organise events such as Chinese New Year celebrations, calligraphy workshops, and cultural trips.

• Develop partnerships with local and international organisations to enhance cultural learning.

• Encourage participation in national and international competitions and build links with external organisations


6) Operational Leadership & Compliance

• Ensure learning environments meet high standards of safety and compliance; maintain accurate departmental records (assessment data, progress tracking, schemes, policies).

• Coordinate with operations and procurement teams for resourcing (textbooks, manipulatives, technology, software) and classroom readiness.

• Support assemblies, duty cover, calendared events, and crisis/emergency procedures as required.

• Ensure compliance with safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies.

• Contribute to marketing and admissions events, showcasing Chinese provision.


7) Financial Responsibility & Budget Oversight

• Plan, submit, and manage the departmental budget, ensuring cost‑effective allocation of resources.

• Oversee procurement and maintenance of mathematical resources, including textbooks, digital platforms, licences, manipulatives, assessment materials, and specialist equipment.

• Work with procurement and operations to ensure timely, compliant purchasing, vendor management, inventory control, and lifecycle planning for hardware/software.

• Monitor usage and impact of purchased resources; adjust spend based on student outcomes, teacher feedback, and strategic priorities.


8) Marketing, Admissions & Community Engagement

• Contribute to marketing and admissions events, showcasing Chinese provision.

• Assist with open days, information sessions, taster lessons, and marketing content to showcase Chinese learning and outcomes.

• Engage parents through workshops, communications, and home‑school partnership initiatives.

• Provide translation support for parents, including verbally during meetings, and for letters and official school documents.
