EAL Teacher (Whole School)

Position Summary

RGSPP is seeking a dedicated EAL Teacher to provide high-quality support to students who are learning English as an additional language. The postholder will teach EAL lessons, deliver small-group and one-to-one interventions, and collaborate with teachers across the school to ensure multilingual learners can access the curriculum and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The EAL Teacher will also support assessment of students’ language needs, track progress, and contribute to the development of effective EAL strategies in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Teach EAL classes across a range of ages (Primary and/or Secondary, depending on timetable).

  • Deliver small-group and individual EAL support sessions.

  • Plan lessons that focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English.

  • Support students in developing academic vocabulary and language for learning.

  • Contribute to differentiated classroom practice so that EAL learners can access mainstream lessons.

Curriculum Support & Assessment

  • Assess new students’ English language levels and provide recommendations for support.

  • Monitor student progress through ongoing assessments and reports.

  • Maintain clear records of interventions and outcomes.

  • Share strategies with subject teachers to embed language scaffolding in their lessons.

Pastoral & Student Wellbeing

  • Support EAL learners in their social integration and cultural adjustment.

  • Encourage confidence and independence in English use, both in and out of class.

  • Liaise with pastoral staff to ensure the wellbeing of multilingual learners.

  • Communicate regularly with parents about progress and ways to support at home.

Professional Contribution

  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings, INSET days, and training.

  • Share resources, strategies, and best practice with colleagues.

  • Contribute to whole-school events and initiatives celebrating language and cultural diversity.

  • Take part in extracurricular activities such as EAL clubs or cultural exchange opportunities.
