How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day at Primary School

18 កក្កដា 2025

A guide for families starting their journey at Reigate Grammar School Phnom Penh.

The first day of school marks an important and often emotional milestone—for both children and their families. Whether your child is joining Early Years or entering a new stage of learning, this moment represents the beginning of an exciting journey of discovery, growth, and opportunity.

At Reigate Grammar School Phnom Penh, we understand the significance of this transition and are committed to working in partnership with parents to ensure each child feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive from the very first day.

To help ease the transition, we’ve prepared some helpful guidance for families as they prepare their child for the start of school life:

1. Set Positive Expectations

Begin talking about school in a calm and encouraging way. Focus on the exciting aspects—making new friends, learning through play, engaging in creative activities, and discovering new things each day. Reassurance and positivity from home go a long way in helping your child feel confident.

2. Establish a Gentle Routine

Children benefit from consistency. In the days leading up to the first day, begin to introduce a school-like routine—early bedtimes, healthy breakfasts, and calm mornings. This helps children feel well-rested and emotionally prepared.

3. Practise Independence

Support your child in building simple self-help skills: putting on their shoes, using the toilet independently, washing hands, and tidying up. These small but important steps foster confidence and make the classroom experience more enjoyable.

4. Familiarise Your Child with the School

Where possible, visit the school grounds, take part in orientation activities, or simply talk about what the school day will look like. A settling-in session—something we encourage at RGS PP—can be a valuable way for children to get comfortable in the new environment.

5. Prepare Together

Involve your child in packing their school bag the day before. This may include a labelled water bottle, a healthy snack, and perhaps a small comfort item for our youngest pupils. This creates a sense of ownership and excitement about the day ahead.

6. Keep Goodbyes Short and Reassuring

It’s natural for both parent and child to feel emotional on the first day. A warm hug, a confident smile, and a brief goodbye will help your child settle more quickly. Rest assured, our team is well-practised in supporting children through those first-day jitters.
